Open Knowledge Foundation is seeking to hire a contract developer to work on a joint collaborative project between Dryad and the open source Frictionless Data project. The contract for the position is expected to apply for a period of 6 months, with an estimated start date of early January 2021. This is an hourly contract position, with an estimate of 20 - 40 hours per week.

Open Knowledge Foundation and Frictionless Data
Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF) is a global non-profit organisation focused on realising open data’s value to society by helping civil society groups access and use data to take action on social problems. Frictionless Data is an initiative at OKF producing a collection of specifications and software for the publication, transport, and consumption of data. The work has wide and growing adoption across the data science and civic tech domains. Frictionless Data for Reproducible Research is a second phase project with funding from the Sloan Foundation to support OKF in applying Frictionless Data specifications and software to reproducible research across a range of scientific disciplines.

Dryad
Dryad is a non-profit organization working to promote a world where research data is openly available, integrated with the scholarly literature, and routinely re-used to create knowledge. They provide the infrastructure for and promote the re-use of open data, through their data publishing platform, data curation and integration with publishing and community standards. 

What are we looking for?

Dryad and Frictionless Data are partnering to implement enhancements to the file upload feature in the Dryad data publishing platform. This workflow will use Frictionless Data open source code to describe and validate data as it is submitted by researchers, and provide feedback to the submitters immediately. The Dryad platform is built with Ruby on Rails, and the Frictionless Data code base is Python.  An ideal candidate will be comfortable with both languages. You will work with both the Dryad and the Frictionless Data teams in a collaborative, remote environment. 

What will you do?

You will work closely with the agile Dryad product development team to enhance the upload feature and liaise with the Frictionless Data team for technical support. You will attend project planning meetings with both groups, and work in an asynchronous fashion, using collaboration tools such as Slack and GitHub projects to communicate with the teams. You will use Ruby on Rails for frontend development and Python for data submission validation. The contract term is for 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Ruby on Rails with experience with ActiveRecord ORM and rspec
  • Familiarity with Python
  • Javascript /jQuery,  React experience desirable 
  • Experience with git version control, Bash shell, HTML and CSS
  • Knowledge of agile development methodology
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Collaborative and transparent team member
  • Strong communications skills
  • Experience working with distributed, remote team members
  • Experience working on open source projects is desirable
  • Experience working with researchers or scientists is desirable


The position is remote, with flexibility in time and availability, both over a given week and over the course of engagement, however you will need to be available to attend project meetings with team members in US timezones. The contract for the position is expected to apply for a period of 6 months.

Closing date: This role will remain open until 18 December. Expected start date for this position is early January 2021.

Compensation Range: £35,000 - £45,000 (FTE pro-rata)
